How did you get here?

Well, isn’t that an interesting question? Is it because there are different ways to answer it? What type of “here” did you think of first? My blog? Your physical location? Wait! Why am I asking you so many questions? You didn’t come here to be interrogated, at least I don’t think you did. Is that a question I should ask myself? Anyways, why are you here? my guess (I’m not the smartest cookie) but you are here to find out how I got here. Now, that that’s establish I have some bad news. I hate to spoil it for you, but I think it’s way more important how I get there (I’m seriously pointing to the future). Even bigger to note is that welp, you have no idea how here, there or anywhere is even relevant to my being here (in this instance I mean blogging site). However, if you hang around the “get here” part will be answered.. mostly because it’s relevant to the there I just referenced. Something to note here (as in the present moment) is that the journey from here to there will be the most exciting, horrifying and fulfilling journey and maybe, just maybe that’s more important then the here or there. But enough of that for now. I say we put on our best walking shoes and do what they are made for…

Research Statement: What to do on the Journey?

As ballet continues to be thought of as the beginning of dance it becomes increasingly important to recognize what it lacks as a foundational tool to help undue that thought process. African dance and movements of the African diaspora are not currently recognized as foundational technique for dance students and only recently gained popularity as well as being recognized. In my experience, as I’ve taught African dance across the nation, dancers with ballet and/or western dance training only, find difficulty in adapting to Africanist movement and rhythm.  Additionally, those with Africanist movement training find it difficult to gain successful careers in dance. My research aims to address these in two ways. First, by creating base curriculum that can be used as a foundation block in studios and educational systems.  Learning these two opposing styles of dance, ballet and African, as a foundation will allow the pros and cons of each to counteract one another and create a well-rounded dancer. Second, to redefine what a successful career looks like for dancers with an Africanist movement base.  Understanding that ballet has limited access in many communities whereas an African dance class could be located at a community recreation center. As I’ve began my dance journey with these beginnings and have only recently felt some success after what has been defined in dance culture as an unsuccessful career for quite a time. Creating African dance curriculum and redefining success is challenging and fascinating and can have a lasting effect on the dance field.

Lyrics

Got my walking shoes on
Can’t tell you where I’m going
But I’m walking down this lonely road
But at least the scenery is beautiful
An no matter what I do I can’t stop walking no
I know its the only way to go
And if I keep walking I’mma be ok
Its not always about knowing why
Sometimes its all about knowing what
And that’s enough to keep you walking everydayYeah I believe, I believe
But its a dream that I ain’t seen yet
Chasing a dream that I ain’t dreamed yet
But I’mma meet it halfway if I keep on walking, walking, walking If I keep on walking,
Yeah I know it when I see it walking, walking when I see it walkingAlways waiting for something good to find you
But if it don’t come what are you gone do
And that’s why I’m walking, walking
Gotta keep on walking, walkingI tell you when you’ve got a made up mind
Even though winter feels like summertime
In the night you see the light of day
Cause I’ve been blind for way to long
And you can’t take my light away
Even though all my times aren’t happy times
I get unsure and hope for brighter days
I never let it slow my pace
So knowing failure ain’t an option
And I’ve been promised
And I’m on my way upSaid I believe, I believe
But its a dream that I ain’t seen yet
Chasing a dream that I ain’t dreamed yet
But I’mma meet it halfway if I keep on walking, walking, walking
If I keep on walking yeah I know it when I see it walking, walking when I see it walkingAlways waiting for something good to find you
But if it don’t come what are you gone do
And that’s why I’m walking, walking
Gotta keep on walking, walkingStep 1, step 2, step 2, step 3
Step 1, step 2, step 3
Thy Word’s a light unto my path
A lamp unto my feet
These shoes, these shoes, these shoes my shoes
Walking towards the promise
Walking towards much better landSaid I believe, I believe
But its a dream that I ain’t seen yet
Chasing a dream that I ain’t dreamed yet
But I’mma meet it halfway if I keep on walking, walking, walking If I keep on walking walking, yeah I know it when I see it walking, walking when I see it walkingWalking shoes, walking shoes
